ISTANBUL: The first session of qualifying that would eliminate the slowest eight cars set the mood to what could be an exciting race.
With 7/10th of a second separating the quickest Ferrari driven by Felipe Massa to the 15th-placed Nick Heidfeld, the stage was set for the second round of elimination.
Q2 saw the irrepressible
Sebastian Vettel go quickest. After having wrecked every corner of his car during Friday's FP1, it had looked like he could struggle during qualifying.
But Formula One demonstrated once again as to why it's the pinnacle of technology when Red Bull put the car together overnight back into serious competition.
It is a painstaking job to replace body parts and hundreds of tiny components that are identical to the ones that crumbled under the high-speed impact. A millimetre plus-minus, especially in the aero parts, could make a world of difference.
Vettel's eventual pole position proved the mettle of the RBR team that brought in the other Red Bull, driven by
Mark Webber, into second place ahead although a hefty 4/10ths of a second adrift and just one hundredth of a second quicker than Nico Rosberg in his ever-improving Mercedes!
Nico has been undoubtedly strong over the weekend and his third place doesn't surprise me at all. There's no doubt we are going to see a lot more of Nico in the front rows on a regular basis.
Force India finished in the middle - 12th and 13th on the grid - a position they would accept, as that's where they are expected to be for now. Narain Karthikeyan had another bad day at the office but seems satisfied with the fact that his HRT is slowly but surely improving.
He is aware of the uphill task facing him and is dealing with it rather well. Weather in Istanbul is sunny with Vettel expected to extend his reign.
